If you are suffering from depression try to grab at least 20 minutes direct sunlight a day.
The reason?
In direct sunlight our bodies produce Vitamin D, Vitamin D helps against depression.
Vitamin D isn't easy to come by, there are two different types, our main source of vitamin D is the sun, other sources include mushrooms, oily fish and some meats but the levels of vitamin D in these foods are relatively low compared to having spent 20 minutes in direct sunlight.
20 minutes of direct sunlight per day is all you need to get your Vitamin D quota. It's also self regulating so you cannot overdose on Vitamin D, once our bodies have produced enough they will stop producing Vitamin D until we need to replenish it.
Vitamin D is also thought to be effective in preventing various types of cancer and it is known to prevent conditions such as ricketts.
The darker your skin less Vitamin D you will produce from sunlight.
It is thought that Vitamin D deficiency is a major contributor to the high suicide rate in countries in northern hemisphere, particularly in the artic circle.
In some countries, such as Canada, they add vitamin D supplements to milk. This is not done in the UK.
Sun protection cream stops nearly all production of Vitamin D from the sun! This is a fact. In order to gain vitamin D from the sun you need to go out in the sun without protection! This may seem a little crazy but we're only talking about 20 minutes in the British summer. After you've had 20 minutes you can then apply sun cream and stay in the sun, cover up, or get out of the sun but it vital that you don't wear any sun protection and have your skin exposed for 20 minutes.
It doesn't work through glass either because glass will filter out the UV that enables your body to create Vitamin D.
I can't stand the winter, I get completely down, I love the sun and struggle to keep my self a float during the winter. Now I know why - Vitamin D deficiency. Not enough sunlight.
