LAUNCH OF SPECTRUM ART GALLERY
I interviewed Natasha Pickford the Spectrum Art Gallery Co-Ordinator who told me about the philosophy behind the pioneering project. She told me that the gallery has come out of a real need for a permanent art space for people with mental health problems. The gallery is based in the Michael Young building at Manzil Way, Oxford. By having such a gallery all involved hope to challenge mental health stigma and bring awareness to the needs of artists with mental health problems. Natasha grew up in an artistic family and did art throughout her schooling. ‘In my 20’s I became very interested in digital photography, working with photo shop. More recently I have been drawing and painting’. She recently ran a series of art workshops at Leap which were well attended and I thoroughly enjoyed them. The gallery is dependant on volunteers and ongoing funding. The launch of the gallery was on the 31st March and continues to be open to everyone at various open times: Tue, Thur, Fri 11am-4:30pm Wed 4:30pm-8pm 1st Saturday of the month 11am-5pm.
