I thought I'd put up a post about this because in my experience people often smoke when they are feeling low / depressed.. I'm unsure as to whether it actually helps at all.. certainly my doctor advised me not to give up smoking when I was going through a particular ruff patch. do people find smoking to have any positive effect on your mental state? I think the ban is on July this year..

48 hours now.. the cravings are really bad but I'm starting to feel improvements in my health. excersise is much easier, and my sense of taste is better.. still not much improvement in smell. a friend gave me a few nicoteen sweets which I have had 1 of today.. this gives a kick rather like a cigerette so I'm hoping to to use it that much.. just when I'm desperate. I also spent my first time in a pub around smokers.. it actually felt good saying I was a none smoker. so they say the first three days are the worse.. so only 24 hours to go!! trev

Good on you, Trev! I took a class last year and just dug out my book. I am sure you're not the only one who is trying to stop smoking, so I thought I'd share a few tips they have for people who would like to stop. -Pick a quit day. -Tell your friends, family, & coworkers that you are quitting. -Clean your house, car, & place of work. -Before you "quit" start to delay your use by 5 minutes, and then to 10 minutes. -Eat fruit -Pray or mediate -Practice deep breathing -Do what you can today to avoid stress later -Practice saying "No, thank you. I have stopped smoking." -Get a survival pack! Make a list of three reasons you want to quit, a phone number of a friend you can call to encourage you, something you can use to get your mind off the physical craving (gum, candy, straw, or toothpick). Cary that with you, and when you are tempted to smoke use them. (this is from the Department of Health, Tobacco Prevention Resource Center) I hope that helps!

I have to say I use a lot of them and particularly the survival pack (with bits of raw carrots, and mars bars at the moment).. but yeah I've lasted the 3 days.. I'm hoping it'll be easier from here on.. these days have been difficult.. but I really feel like I've achieved something..

Trev, you can resist! I know you can. Thank you erica.. it's now been 9 days!! it does get a bit easier but it's soooo tempting just to have one (I know one will lead to three then five ten etc.. so it's a big no no).. i have to say when the smoking ban does come in i'll find it a lot easier.. there's so much temptation to smoke.. it's not supprising it's so difficult to give up.. i think the smoking ban should have come in a long time ago. trev

it has now been exactly 2 weeks sinse my last cigerett!!!! I have to admit I'm impressed with myself (gloat gloat).. the last few attenpts at stopping only lasted about 2 days max. I'm finding it a bit easier now.. I've been in most situations.. pubs, gigs, mornings, after food.. and they were all difficult to tackle but are getting easier. I have to say my voice and stamina are a lot better already, and I'd encourage anyone else giving up smoking to take up some physical activity at the same time and you can really notice it. anyway I'll let you know when I get to a month (when.. not if!!!) trev ps thank you everyone who has been supportive

I played in a pub called the crown in Faringdon last night.. and I have to say I was very tempted to smoke.. It was a smoking pub and a lot of the people there were.. I wreckon it'll be a lot easier when the ban comes in.. the longer I go without smoking the less I like being around people when they smoke.. 2 weeks 4 days!!!
